Healthy Sleep Environment
We always want our dogs to be comfortable, but never more so than when they are healing and recuperating. An extra-comfortable bed, perhaps even with an orthopedic mattress can make sleep that much more plush.
Our dogs also need to rest in quiet, full darkness for their bodies to access the natural rhythms needed to heal. This quality sleep may help to boost levels of the hormone melatonin in your dog's body. Dr. Dressler recommends making your dog's night-time environment as dark as possible, for as long as possible. It may not feel like it, but creating a "den" atmosphere for your dog at night could be considered a cancer treatment. The Dog Cancer Survival Guide explains the benefits in detail. Some dogs may also tolerate melatonin supplements.
